Preliminary Task

For my preliminary task, we were asked to make a short video. I was not told about the 180 & 30-degree rule. My task lacked a bit in this as you will find out. They did however have to include various shots e.g  'Shot, reverse shot' which contained a conversation between two people and I filmed who ever was talking to make it look like as if it's a natural conversation. This is more appealing to the viewer and it's more natural.
I found my 'Match On Action' shot to be smooth. This was when I opened the door and I continuously went in to shot, and I sat down. Here is a screen grab from my video to outline this.

After this scene, I faded out, this gave the effect of time passing. I also found my 'Point Of View' shot to be very effective. This was to give the effect of me walking. I did this in hand-held style to make the walking more real life.

In 0:38, my friend watches myself walking into shot. He moves his face as if he is following me. This I found went well and emphasised the reality of the situation.
If I could change, I would reshoot various scenes like the opening of the door scene. I would of liked to get a shot of the door closing to give more clarity for the match on action.

With my first walking scene  it is good, however I suddenly cut to a completely different scene which defeats physics. This is not very realistic and I would of reshot this. For the 'shot, reverse shot' at the very end, I would of liked to put in a two man shot, just to establish the situation.

I have learnt that when filming, you need to tell a story but not to confuse the viewer. You need to go through all the various stages as if you are reliving his every step. I have also learnt that from a class-room perspective,  I can incorporate a whole range of different shots to make it more exciting like a low angle shot or various close ups.

Here is my preliminary task, in its entirety.....

Continuity editing

In my hybrid genre, I want to contain continuity in my editing.

This is to maintain a consistent and unbroken film, with clean cuts and professional editing.

To do this, I have to try and not break certain rules.

This means keeping to my 180 degree rule.

This is the 180 degree rule, It is mainly used to show the relationship to show two characters. To achieve this rule, you need to always keep the camera on one side of the axis. This is a line that goes straight through the middle. If the camera passes this axes, the cut jumps. This decreases the relationship on continuity. If broken, from a film perspective, it looks like both characters have swapped sides. Thus the film breaks continuity and viewers can recognise this as being a fault.
I shall also try and not and break the 30 degree rule. This is to avoid all jump cuts. This simpily means when filming someone, or something, I try and not move more than 30 degrees. If broken, it looks like the camera has jumped and thus the continuity does not flow.

Here is an example.
